The Mikado Dining Table

A solid oak dining table built around its base. Most dining tables start with the top. The Mikado started with the legs.

Designed by Alain van Havre, the Mikado is built around a single structural idea — that two sets of solid oak legs, tapered and precisely shaped, can interlock under a rectangular top without a single bolt holding the puzzle together. The result is a base that earns more attention than most dining tables manage with their entire design. Functional. Sculptural. Completely its own.

Interlocking oak legs — the engineering is the design

Two leg types — one tapering from 7.2 to 9cm, one from 7 to 8.8cm — slot together to form a base that distributes load evenly and creates a visual tension that makes the table look like it is always mid-motion. Like the Japanese game it takes its name from, where removing a single element collapses the whole, nothing about the Mikado base is incidental. Rated to 160kg and standing 73cm clear beneath the top, it is as structurally confident as it looks.

Solid oak, two finishes — oiled natural oak or varnished oak black

The tabletop and base are cut from 100% solid oak — Quercus robur sourced from Serbia — giving each table a grain pattern that no two pieces share exactly. In the oiled natural oak finish the wood is treated with a PFAS-free hardwax oil that feeds the grain and keeps the surface open and warm to the touch. In the varnished oak black finish a varnish closes the surface and deepens the oak to near-black, changing the character of the table entirely while keeping the same interlocking base structure beneath.
