The Ultimate Table Care Guide: Tips & Tricks for Long-Lasting Beauty

At Pod Furniture, we take pride in offering high-quality solid wood tables that are built to last. We carry a curated selection of brands known for their exceptional craftsmanship.  One of the most common questions that we get from our customers is how to properly care for and maintain these beautiful pieces. Solid wood tables are more than just furniture, they’re an investment in timeless design and durability. In this blog post, you will read about our top tips and tricks on keeping your table looking its best for years to come.

Daily Care And Maintenance for Solid Wood Tables

Caring for your solid oak dining table is essential to preserve its natural beauty, protect it from everyday wear, and ensure it lasts for generations as a timeless centerpiece in your home. To do this, you will need a dry, soft cloth, a damp cloth and natural soap.

Dusting

Regular dusting helps prevent the build-up of dirt that can scratch the wood surface over time. Use a soft, dry cloth, preferably microfiber or a lint-free cotton cloth for regular dusting. Avoid using feather dusters, as they can sometimes scratch the surface or scatter dust into the air instead of removing it.

Spills

Wipe up spills immediately using a damp cloth and a small amount of natural soap. Harsh chemicals or all-purpose cleaners can damage the wood or strip the finish, so it’s best to stick with mild, natural solutions. Always wipe in the direction of the wood grain to avoid streaks. Once the spill is cleaned, follow up with a dry, clean cloth to remove any remaining moisture and prevent water spots.

Protection

Use coasters, placemats, and mouse pads to guard against water rings, heat damage, scratches and food stains. Even a hot mug or cold glass can leave lasting marks on untreated or lightly finished wood. Daily heat or moisture exposure can damage the finish. Occasionally move vases and décor items, and check for any trapped moisture. To refresh the surface or remove light stains like crayon marks, clean with soap and dry thoroughly.

Treating Solid Oak Tables

When it comes to solid wood tables, Bolia and Ethnicraft are two of our top-selling brands — and for good reason. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship, both brands specialize in high-quality solid oak tables that are built to last.

To help preserve the natural beauty and longevity of these pieces, Bolia and Ethnicraft each offer their own specially formulated care products. While designed with their own collections in mind, these maintenance products are perfect for any solid oak table, keeping in mind that they offer their own instructions.  This ensures that it stays protected, nourished, and looking its best for years to come.

Bolia

To deep clean your Bolia solid wood table, start by shaking your wood cleaner well. Mix one part cleaner with two parts lukewarm water. Using a sponge, apply the mixture in a thin, even layer and gently rub it in the direction of the wood grain until it forms a light lather. Let it sit for about five minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water. If the wood feels rough or dry afterward, lightly sand the surface along the grain using a sanding sponge.

Once the table is clean and dry, it’s time to apply wood oil. Shake the oil well before use, then use a sponge or a lint-free cloth to apply a thin, even coat, both on the top and underside of the table, always following the direction of the grain. Any excess oil can be gently wiped away with a clean, dry cloth. Allow the oil to dry completely, which typically takes about 24 hours. For lasting protection and to keep the wood looking its best, repeat this oiling process three to four times a year.

 Ethnicraft

For regular care, apply the Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner with a cloth, wiping along the direction of the grain. Let it dry for 15–30 minutes and wait at least 4 hours before using the table again. If you are not satisfied, repeat the process.

For stubborn stains or discoloration, use the Osmo Hardwax Cleaner on a clean, dry surface. To treat superficial scratches, sand lightly with fine to medium-grit sandpaper depending on the severity. Apply the product evenly, wipe away any excess after 10 minutes, and allow 4 hours for results to show. If satisfied, let the table cure for 24 hours. For deeper marks, repeat the process with heavier sanding as needed.

Applying Outdoor Teak Protector

With summer just around the corner, your teak furniture is likely to take centre stage in your outdoor living space. To help keep it looking its best throughout the season, proper care is essential. Here are our top tips for protecting your Ethnicraft outdoor teak table using the Outdoor Teak Protector.

Ensure that your furniture is thoroughly dry and dust free before using. Make sure to wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Shake the Teak Protector well before using. Apply a thin layer with a soft cloth. Gently dab to evenly apply the product. Leave for 1 hour before applying a second thin layer of product. Let the wood dry for 48 hours before being exposed by the rain or any water.
